Going to the cinema is a communal experience, yet many moviegoers accidentally break the unspoken social contract of the theater. To ensure everyone enjoys the film, here are five unwritten rules that every respectful viewer should follow.

1. Silence Your Tech

This is the golden rule. Even a dimmed screen is a massive distraction in a dark room. Turn your phone completely off or set it to "Do Not Disturb" before the trailers begin. If you must check the time, do it discreetly, but avoid it entirely to stay immersed.

2. Keep the Commentary for Later

While discussing the plot is fun, save the analysis for the lobby. Whispering may seem polite, but it is incredibly distracting to those around you. If you have a burning theory, jot it down or wait until the credits roll to share your thoughts.

3. Mind Your Personal Space

Theater seats are cramped enough without elbows encroaching on your neighbor’s territory. Unless the theater is nearly empty, try to leave a buffer seat if possible, and be mindful of how much space you take up. Also, keep your feet off the back of the seat in front of you—it’s a major pet peeve.

4. Be Punctual

Arriving late disrupts the flow of the film and forces others to stand up so you can squeeze into your row. Aim to be in your seat before the trailers end to avoid becoming an obstruction in the dark.

5. Clean Up After Yourself

The theater staff has very little time to clean between screenings. By simply taking your empty popcorn bucket and soda cup to the trash bin on your way out, you show respect for the workers and your fellow movie fans.
